History of Folding Chairs

Folding Chairs in the Past:

Thousands of years ago, the folding chair was regarded as
one of the most wonderful pieces of furniture in the household and it was considered a high-end status symbol.

Only wealthy people could have a chair that folded.

The chairs were used in several ways. For example, in these ancient civilizations, folding stools were used not merely for sitting but also for ceremonial use. They enhanced the sacredness of an event or ritual.

Among the most important styles of Egyptian
furniture from the past is the folding stool. The folding stool was developed
in 2000-1500 b.c. as a portable chair for the commanding
officer in the army.

Having a chair that folded was a symbol of royalty and vitality. It was a sign of worthy divinity
(For example: King Tutankhamun's royal throne. Look closely and you will see the foldable seat with a back support).

The Egyptian folding stool became the prototype of the
roman chair.

Transition from Royal Status to Commonplace

As folding chairs became more commonplace, they gradually lost some of their "high status" meaning. Because they were no longer a symbol of status, more innovations came about and so this change lead to the development of new uses and more comfortable designs.

By the 19th century, folding chairs became very common, especially in areas where there was a regular need to rearrange or remove seating.

Military Use

The folding chair has a long history of military use. They were used for their portability and function, but not for their aesthetic appeal.

Chair for recreation

Mobility and travel has increased to the point where there is a special
industry producing the smallest and lightest pieces of folding
furniture which can cope with every climate.

Folding chairs are designed for camping, sitting on the beach,
attending a sporting event...chairs for every habit, need and necessity.
